Welcome to Designing, Conducting & Utilizing Applied Qualitative Health Research. The webinar will be delivered virtually and will include four webinars:
- Webinar #1: A Plan for Determining When, How, Why and What You Need to Conduct a Qualitative Health Research Study.
- Webinar #2: Crafting an EPPiC Research Question to Guide Qualitative Health Research Study Design Selection & Sampling.
- Webinar #3: A decision-making framework for developing a data generation plan for a qualitative health research study.
- Webinar #4: A team-based approach to rapid qualitative analysis.
Target Audience
Faculty, Research Staff (Research Associates/Coordinators/Assistants), Graduate Students (Masters/PhD), and Residents.
Learning Objectives
Over the course of four webinars, you will have the opportunity to deepen your understanding about:
- The domains of applied qualitative health research;
- The utility of qualitative findings in evidence-informed decision-making;
- How to identify problems or issues grounded in health care practice, education, or policy that can be explored through qualitative methods;
- Practical approaches for designing and conducting qualitative studies. Including how to develop an answerable research question, how to estimate a sample size, how to develop a comprehensive data generation (collection) strategy, and one approach to generating policy/practice-ready findings using a team-based, rapid approach to analysis.
The Webinars
Webinar #1: “Perhaps we should ask them about their experiences!” – A Plan for Determining When, How, Why and What You Need To Conduct a Qualitative Health Research Study
Speaker: Susan Jack, RN, PhD, FCAN
Webinar structure:
1. Introduction/land acknowledgment (5 minutes)
2. Presentation (35-40 minutes):
- Describe the domains and parameters of qualitative health research
- Understand the value of using qualitative methods to understand or address problems grounded in healthcare practice, education, research or policy
- List the resources and skills required for a qualitative research team
- Develop a checklist to guide the design and conduct of a qualitative health research study
3. Question and Answers (10-15 minutes)
4. Closing Remarks with a reminder for the next presentation.
Webinar #2: “Methodological congruence is the goal – or finding the ‘fit’ between the research objectives, question and design” – Crafting an EPPiC Research Question to Guide Qualitative Health Research Study Design Selection & Sampling
Speaker: Erika Bassi, RN, PhD and Susan Jack, RN, PhD, FCAN
Webinar structure:
1. Introduction/land acknowledgment (5 minutes)
2. Presentation (35-40 minutes):
- Articulate the overall purpose of your qualitative health research study.
- Apply the EPPiC (Emphasis-Purposeful Sample-Phenomenon of Interest-Context) framework to craft an overarching qualitative research question.
- Guided by the study purpose statement and overarching research question, consider and select an appropriate study design.
3. Question and Answers (10-15 minutes)
4. Closing Remarks with a reminder for next presentation.
Webinar #3: “It’s not just deciding between 1:1 interviews or focus groups!” – A decision-making framework for developing a data generation plan for a qualitative health research study
Speaker: Elizabeth Orr, RN, PhD, and Carly Whitmore, RN, PhD
Webinar Structure:
1. Introduction/land acknowledgment (5 minutes)
2. Presentation (35-40 minutes):
- Apply a framework to guide data generation (collection) decision-making in a qualitative health research study, including considerations on how to address the following questions: What types of data will be generated? Who is involved in data generation? Where will data generation occur? When will data generation occur? How will data be recorded and managed? How will participants’ and researchers’ emotional safety be promoted?
3. Question and Answers (10-15 minutes)
4. Closing Remarks with a reminder for next presentation
Webinar #4: “So much data, so little time…” – A team-based approach to rapid qualitative analysis
Speaker: Karen Campbell, RN, PhD, and Susan Jack, RN, PhD
Webinar Structure:
1. Introduction/land acknowledgment (5 minutes)
2. Presentation (35-40 minutes):
- Describe the indications for using rapid qualitative analysis
- Review a checklist for planning and coordinating a team-based event for rapid qualitative analysis
- Describe the steps involved to summarize, synthesize, and report descriptive qualitative data using a rapid analytic process
3. Question and Answers (10-15 minutes)
4. Closing remarks
Speakers
Susan Jack, RN, PhD, FCAN
Professor, School of Nursing & Associate Member, Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence & Impact, McMaster University, Visiting Professor, University of Eastern Piedmont
Dr. Jack has 20 years of experience in teaching and conducting applied qualitative health research and mixed methods. Her program of research is focused on the development, evaluation, and implementation of community-based interventions to improve maternal-child health outcomes and prevent family violence. She is passionate about sharing practical guidance on how to design rigorous qualitative studies and how to use qualitative evidence in decision-making.
Erika Bassi, RN, PhD
Research Fellow, Department of Translational Medicine, University of Eastern Piedmont
Dr. Bassi is an early career researcher at the University of Eastern Piedmont in Italy. With a PhD in Nursing Science, her expertise includes evidence-informed decision-making, quality improvement, and nursing-sensitive indicators measurement. She is currently involved in projects related to models of nursing care delivery employing qualitative health research methods to identify factors influencing implementation.
