Advancing Data Generation Skills in Applied Qualitative Health Research
Target Audience
Individuals seeking to advance their skills in developing, conducting and debriefing qualitative interviews and focus groups, including Graduate Students, Trainees, Research Staff, Faculty, and Clinician-Scientists.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this learning activity, the learners will be able to:
- Apply the six components of a framework to guide the process of data generation specific to applied qualitative health research.
- Understand the purpose, relevance and process of reflexivity and positionality statements as critical elements of applied qualitative health research.
- Construct a semi-structured interview guide incorporating relevant questioning techniques (e.g., probes and prompts) and organizational structure.
- Demonstrate the process of conducting in-depth one-to-one interviews and focus groups, utilizing effective communication and facilitation skills.
- Integrate various elicitation strategies within the context of in-depth, semi-structured interviews to foster deeper insights and participant engagement.
- Identify strategies, including the use of debriefing protocols, to prioritize the emotional safety of both participants and research team members.
