Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation: Foundations and Reflections

Online Course Description

This EDI-IR course allows you to acquire a broad understanding of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation (EDI-IR) concepts and contextualize them to your own work. Throughout this material, you will be asked not only to explore foundational EDI-IR concepts but also to reflect upon how these concepts apply to your personal and professional self-identity.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the basic concepts and principles associated with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous Reconciliation.
  • Explore an introduction to the major themes of Human Rights, Bias, Racism, Indigenous Perspectives and Reconciliation, Gender and Sex Bias, and Accessibility.
  • Reflect on ways in which these thematic areas impact you and others in your personal and professional contexts.

*The middle section, Thematic Explorations, has six modules that can be completed in any order.

Each section has a series of required and optional tasks and additional resources. You will be able to save and edit your reflections before submission. After submission, you may review and download your reflections but not edit them.

This EDI-IR course was developed in the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation Advisory Committee (EDI-IR AC). This work was completed by a subcommittee of the EDI-IR AC, with co-leads Drs. Clare Wallner and Anne Wong.

Anne Wong
Dr. Anne Wong, Professor, Anesthesia

Dr. Anne Wong is a Professor and Associate Chair of Education at the McMaster University Department of Anesthesia. She also holds a Master of Health Professional Education and a PhD in Comparative and International Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. She has held a number of roles, including as past Assistant Dean of the Program for Faculty Development at McMaster University, Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences Academic Leadership Program, and Editorial Board Member for the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. She is a member of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion-Indigenous Reconciliation (EDI-IR) Committee and Co-Chair of the EDI-IR Training and Professional Development Working Subgroup. She was recognized with the 2020 Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit Award for her contributions to medical education.
