Qualitative Health Research (QHR) Foundations

Online Course Description

Modules will be delivered virtually and will include the following:

  • Module 1: A Plan for Determining When, How, Why, and What You Need to Conduct a Qualitative Health Research Study.
  • Module 2: Crafting an EPPiC Research Question to Guide Qualitative Health Research Study Design Selection and Sampling.
  • Module 3: A Decision-Making Framework for Developing a Data Generation Plan for a Qualitative Health Research Study.
  • Module 4: A Team-Based Approach to Rapid Qualitative Analysis.

Learning Objectives

Over the course of four modules, you will have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of the following:

  • The domains of applied qualitative health research;
  • The utility of qualitative findings in evidence-informed decision-making;
  • How to identify problems or issues grounded in health care practice, education, or policy that can be explored through qualitative methods;
  • Practical approaches for designing and conducting qualitative studies. These include how to develop an answerable research question, how to estimate a sample size, how to develop a comprehensive data generation (collection) strategy, and one approach to generating policy/practice-ready findings using a team-based, rapid approach to analysis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the domains and parameters of qualitative health research.
  • Understand the value of using qualitative methods to understand or address problems grounded in healthcare practice, education, research or policy.
  • List the resources and skills required for a qualitative research team.
  • Develop a checklist to guide the design and conducting of a qualitative health research study.

Learning Objectives:

  • Articulate the overall purpose of your qualitative health research study.
  • Apply the EPPiC (Emphasis-Purposeful Sample-Phenomenon of Interest-Context) framework to craft an overarching qualitative research question.
  • Guided by the study purpose statement and overarching research question, consider and select an appropriate study design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply a framework to guide data generation (collection) decision-making in a qualitative health research study, including considerations on how to address the following questions:
    • What types of data will be generated?
    • Who is involved in data generation?
    • Where will data generation occur?
    • When will data generation occur?
    • How will data be recorded and managed?
    • How will participants’ and researchers’ emotional safety be promoted?

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the indications for using rapid qualitative analysis.
  • Review a checklist for planning and coordinating a team-based event for rapid qualitative analysis.
  • Describe the steps involved to summarize, synthesize, and report descriptive qualitative data using a rapid analytic process.

Dr. Jack has 20 years of experience in teaching and conducting applied qualitative health research and mixed methods. Her program of research is focused on the development, evaluation, and implementation of community-based interventions to improve maternal-child health outcomes and prevent family violence. She is passionate about sharing practical guidance on how to design rigorous qualitative studies and how to use qualitative evidence in decision-making.
