Our office has two key portfolios: Continuing Health Sciences Education (CHSE) and Program for Faculty Development (PFD). Together we provide development opportunities for faculty members and healthcare professionals, and support FHS schools and programs with continuing education.
Why are we doing this?
Our office aims to support health professions and the health sciences community to enable them to achieve their highest potential in health sciences education, research, leadership, and clinical care.
How are we doing this?
We organize programs, events, conferences, webinars, learning modules, and other resources to support the continuing learning journey for health sector professionals. As a Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) accreditor provider, we are able to accredit 90% of our events and thereby provide CFPC MainPro+ and RCPSC Maintenance of Certification (MOC) study credits for Continuing Medical Education.

Our Vision
We are globally recognized for excellence in health sciences continuing professional development.
Our Mission
We exist to support people to achieve their highest potential in health sciences education, research, leadership, and clinical care.
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Office is an integral program in the continuum of education in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at McMaster University. By bringing together the efforts and leadership expertise of the Continuing Health Sciences Education program, the Program for Faculty Development, and the Learning Technology Lab, the scope of the office has broadened into serving both healthcare professionals and faculty. The mandate of our Office is to lead continuing professional development for healthcare professionals and faculty, supporting schools, departments, programs, and faculty members in designing, planning, developing, and delivering effective CPD activities.
The CPD Office in the Faculty of Health Sciences was established in 2019 after a review of business processes and organizational needs mandated by the Faculty Executive. Best practices highlighted that an office of continuing professional development is more effective rather than stand-alone programs. The new office allows a greater strategic oversight of the various programs and permits greater efficiencies, improved quality, increased productivity, and enhanced scholarship.
Our office is structured to facilitate developing and delivering high-quality educational activities that meet the national CPD accreditation standards. This structure also enables us to continuously improve education and scholarship and accomplish the growth needed to achieve the faculty’s academic mission.
The organizational structure, as shown on the chart, reflects the current positioning of the CPD Office within the Faculty’s leadership system, demonstrating the support and value it is given. Support staff positions have also changed since the 2019 report and will continue to develop as the strategic plan and shared resource model among the amalgamated portfolios evolve.
The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Office has continued to grow and develop throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, expanding our office staff and the faculty leadership team. Building upon our experiences from the previous academic year, we have continued to provide exceptional virtual activities and resume in-person programs while exploring new possibilities within hybrid events. The CPD office strives to be the very best in health professions education while simultaneously creating a library of developmental tools, systems, and resources for all faculty and health care professionals.
We look forward to the continued growth and development of each of our three portfolios and the strategic partnerships that we will continue to foster within the Faculty of Sciences here at McMaster University and with our global community worldwide.
