Enhance your skills for engaging with patients, clients, and caregivers through this self-paced, non-academic microcredential. Developed in collaboration with community partners and taught by experts in the field, Engagement and Partnering for People-Centred Care builds the key competencies needed to support your patient, client, and caregiver engagement work. 

 

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, you will be able to:  

  • Describe the key terms, principles, concepts and frameworks of patient, client, and caregiver engagement and partnering for people-centred care.
  • Understand the history, key legislation, and additional structures for engagement and partnering for people-centred care. 
  • Apply current methods and approaches for high quality and equitable-engagement of patients, clients, and caregivers in personal care and health decisions, program and service design, and policy, strategy, and governance.
  • Understand the value, purpose and methods for evaluating patient, client, and caregiver engagement.

Led by Dr. Julia Abelson and the Public and Patient Engagement Collaborative (PPEC) at McMaster University, this course is offered through the Faculty of Health Sciences Continuing Professional Development Office and supported by the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact.

Dr. Julia Abelson, PhD

Julia Abelson is a professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) at McMaster University and leads the Public and Patient Engagement Collaborative (PPEC), which carries out research and service activities to support high-quality engagement in health systems, policy and research. Over her 25-year career, she has advanced the field of public and patient engagement through numerous contributions to knowledge, practice and policy, often in close collaboration with health system managers, policymakers, and people with lived and living experience.

Important Information for Ontario Health Teams

Through the Central Program of Supports for Ontario Health Teams (OHTs), one Learner from each OHT will be eligible to participate in the Engagement and Partnering for People-Centred Care non-academic microcredential in either 2024-25 or 2025-26 at no cost. Who Should Register

Engagement and Partnering for People-Centred Care was developed to support individuals involved in planning, delivering or managing patient, client and caregiver engagement in Ontario’s health and social services sector.

Course enrollees will be employed, affiliated with or seeking roles in a range of organizations including planning/integration, service delivery and government.

Important Dates

Registration for this course opens October 23, 2024.

The course will begin on January 13, 2025, with an initial synchronous welcome meeting on January 20, 2025, from 12–1 p.m.

Course Information

A non-academic microcredential will be issued after you complete, submit, and receive a passing grade (at least 80%) on all required tasks.

This non-academic microcredential is a self-paced, self-directed course offered on an asynchronous online platform through the Faculty of Health Sciences Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Office. Learners will be invited to participate in 4 optional but strongly recommended synchronous sessions via Zoom.

Course modules include:

  • Introducing patient, client, and caregiver engagement.
  • Engagement in personal health, community care, and service decisions.
  • Engagement in program and service design, and organizational strategy and governance.
  • Evaluating engagement for continuous improvement.

It is anticipated it will take learners up to 25 hours to complete the course.
