Session #1: Setting the Learning Environment.

Virtual Patient Care (VPC) has become a ‘new normal’ in medicine necessitating new skills for training residents in most medical specialties. In this webinar, a panel of McMaster postgraduate faculty will introduce best practices and learned experience in teaching residents in the VPC setting.
This is part 1 of 2 webinars in a series being developed jointly by the McMaster PGME office and MacPFD. The second event will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020 and will be on feedback and assessment in virtual care settings.
Objectives
At the end of this activity, faculty will be able to:
1. Review best practices for VPC visits
2. Describe best practices for precepting in VPC setting
3. Decide which visits are amenable to VPC
4. Plan your day while supervising residents in VPC setting
5. Understand the resident perspective

Speaker Biographies (in order of appearance)
JoAnn has held a number of educational roles within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences most recently returning as Director of the Postgraduate Program for a second term. JoAnn is the co-chair of the Canadian Organization of Psychiatric Educators. She has won a number of educational awards including the Sibley Award for Excellence in Education. JoAnn is also the CBME lead for the Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences and was named a CBME Innovator by the Royal College in 2019. JoAnn brings with her eighteen years of medical education experience which now includes online teaching and supervision of virtual care.
Dr. Haroon Yousuf is an Assistant Professor within the Division of Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine. He has completed a Masters in Bioethics and is interested in improving access to healthcare via virtual care. He has an interest in further expanding the role of virtual care in medical education.
Dr. Amie Davis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She is the current Curriculum Director within the Department of Family Medicine, and a previous Site Director for the Halton distributed Family Medicine Site, and interim Site Director for the Niagara distributed Family Medicine site. Her clinical practice incorporates adult inpatient care, family medicine obstetrical and intrapartum care, community based- palliative care, gender affirming primary care, in addition to her family practice at Stonechurch Family Health Centre.
Dr. Usha Parthasarathi is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at the McMaster University. She works as a staff psychiatrist at St Joseph’s Healthcare and works primarily in the Emergency settings. She has developed the virtual clinic for follow up for patients after psychiatric emergency visits during this pandemic crisis. She trained and supervised residents through PES virtual clinic. Her expertise include crisis management, risk assessment ,capacity assessment and virtual acute psychiatric care.
Dr. Zahra Merali (@MeraliZahra) is a PGY3 internal medicine resident at McMaster University. On July 1st, she starts her General Internal Medicine fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. She is co-developer of the podcast initiative, The Intern at Work (@InternAtWork). She is interested in medical education and medical technology/E-health.
Dr. Teresa Chan (@TChanMD) is an associate professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine at McMaster University. She is the assistant dean for McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Program for Faculty Development (@MacPFD). She is an avid scholar in health professions education and works with the MERIT group (@MERIT_McMaster), and conducts research and scholarship within this area.
